The Canadian Military History Gateway (CMHG) is a new website designed to provide the public with free access to the collective military history resources of Canadian museums, libraries, archives and other heritage organizations through a single gateway.

It was developed by the Department of National Defence as an initiative supported by the Department of Canadian Heritage's Canadian Culture Online Program and was produced in partnership with Veterans Affairs Canada, the Canadian War Museum, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), National Film Board of Canada, Library and Archives Canada, and Parks Canada.

The CMHG is an authoritative source of Canadian military history information, with more than 4,000 unique links to military history resources on partner sites, including animation, art, artifacts, film, interactive games, music, narratives, photos and scholarly research. Users will find links to every NFB production having to do with conflict and peace.

The proposed launch will take place in two phases. The go-live date is June 30, 2004, while the official launch is scheduled for September 2004. This will consist of a modest publicity campaign, distribution of pamphlets, posters and educational materials (including a teacher's kit), a media advisory, and a media event. Check out the site at: www.cmhg.gc.ca.

Naval Fund Available to Those in Need

Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund

The Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund (RCNBF) helps to relieve the distress caused by illness, accident or other misfortunes by providing loans or grants to people who are in need of financial assistance. Those eligible for assistance include former members of the Naval Forces of Canada; serving and former members of the Canadian Forces who served in Maritime Command since February 1, 1968; the Merchant Navy War Veterans, and dependents of any of the above.

In the past, the Fund has helped people buy such necessities as clothing and food, and pay for medical, dental, optical, surgical and prosthetic services. It also provides assistance for home repairs and funeral costs and to replace belongings destroyed by fire. In addition, a bursary program for dependant children attending college, university or a vocational institution may be available if other options such as government loans have been exhausted.

The Fund is maintained by donations from serving and ex-service personnel, civilian friends and Naval organizations, as well as investments. Eligibility for a loan or grant through the Fund is determined on an individual basis.
