Col Frank Kossa Memorial Scholarship
Biography
Colonel Frank R. Kossa
Frank R. Kossa was a four-war veteran and long-time Indiana Legionnaire who first entered service during the Woodrow Wilson administration. Col. Kossa had served on active duty in every major conflict in which America was involved during the 20th century: World War 1, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
In 1919, while serving at Fort Sam Houston in Texas following World war 1, Col. Kossa became a charter member of Alamo Post 2 of The American Legion in San Antonio. He worked in the oil and lumber business between the world wars and was recalled to active duty during World War II, in which he was assigned to supply fuel to Allied forces in Burma and India.
Col. Kossa was appointed to the Indiana Selective Service in 1948 and was named director of the service in 1963. Col. Kossa was a resident of Jeffersonville, Indiana, where he was a member of Post 35 of The American Legion.
A member of The American Legion’s National Security Commission, he served as the commission’s vice chairman, 1954-62; and was a member of the National Public Relations Commission, 1953-55. Col. Kossa was Indiana’s Department Commander, 1934-35; and also served as Boys State chairman, and Counter-Subversive Activities Committee Chairman.
Col. Kossa passed away on September 15, 1994 at the age of 96. Services were held at Arlington National Cemetery on September 22, 1994.
Col. Kossa was very active in the Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans in Canada’s United States unit (ANAVICUS).
